Essar Energy Transition applauds UK govt's financial close of HyNet's carbon transport and storage project

Stanlow, Apr 25 (UNI) Essar Energy Transition (EET), which is leading the charge towards a decarbonised economy, has applauded the UK government achieving financial close of the core carbon transport and storage project within the HyNet Industrial Cluster, a crucial component of the country’s decarbonisation strategy.
This achievement will enable the launch of construction of the infrastructure that will drastically reduce carbon emissions and unlock much-needed investment in North West England and North Wales.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has applauded the progress, recognising the vital role the project will play in both the environment and the local economy.
EET’s Hydrogen Production Plant (HPP1), a cornerstone of the HyNet initiative, is expected to be the UK’s first largescale low-carbon hydrogen production plant, with a capacity of 350MW.
The facility will capture approximately 600,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to taking 125,000 cars off the road, directly contributing to the nation’s emissions reduction goals.
Located at the heart of HyNet, EET’s Stanlow Manufacturing Complex, home to the EET Fuels’ refinery, will serve as a key enabler for HPP1.
This refinery is set to help transform Stanlow into a global energy transition hub, with the capability to capture around 2 million tonnes of carbon through its broader decarbonisation efforts, including electrification, carbon capture, and the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
Additionally, the complex’s hydrogen production infrastructure will attract other low-carbon businesses to the region.
Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition, celebrated the achievement, stating, "The HyNet CO2 pipeline is a game-changer for industry in the North West. This milestone not only reinforces the unique positioning of our Stanlow Manufacturing Complex but also presents vast opportunities for local businesses, ensuring Stanlow’s future as one of Europe’s leading decarbonised refineries.”
Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, added, “We are proud that EET Hydrogen’s HPP1 project serves as an anchor project within HyNet. This announcement provides tremendous momentum as we progress towards the construction phase of our flagship project.”
Essar Energy Transition (EET) is committed to leading the UK’s low-carbon transformation, with an investment plan of US$3 billion over the next five years. The company aims to establish a major energy transition hub in North-West England, driving decarbonisation and creating skilled employment opportunities.
Stanlow is the UK’s second largest oil refinery.
